CAN THIS CHARACTER BE CANON PUNCTURED? No
WHAT ARE YOUR INTENTIONS WITH THIS CHARACTER IN GAME? Michonne is a complex, secretive and stubborn woman, but she has slowly begun to open up in the series and through that build herself a family. From the ashes of nothing, shutting herself off from everything she was, Michonne was able to reclaim her humanity through the group; surviving wasn't enough. I want to navigate Michonne's life without an apocalypse overshadowing how she lost herself, while still exploring the strength and conviction of her character.
IN GAME HISTORY: Michonne was born in Atlanta, Georgia, second child to fairly well to do parents, immigrants from South Africa chasing that American Dream. Her father was a human rights lawyer, her mother was an art critic with dreams of owning her own gallery. Michonne and her elder brother were the perfect additions to the perfect life. For the most part things were smooth, they were part of a very diverse and welcoming community, growing up with more available to them than they would have in South Africa, they were told to dream big and it would be possible for them.
Dreaming big wasn't really Michonne's thing though, she kept her dreams manageable, things that she knew she could achieve if she put the work in, made the effort. And she did. Graduating near the top of her class, not valedictorian, but close enough, Michonne got a scholarship to University of Georgia School of Law, following in her father's footsteps with all the encouragement and pride a father could bestow.
Law school went well, Michonne enjoyed the courses, she found her own niche in employment law and criminal law, swaying more towards legal defence than prosecution when it became clear to her that parts of the system were overburdened and broken down. It didn't settle right with Michonne, and her father the human rights lawyer just seemed even prouder at her choice in focus.
While she was studying law, her brother was moving upwards in corporate business, enough so that he aided their mother in finally owning that art gallery. It was at this gallery that Michonne first met Mike, a slightly rough around the edges former gang member trying to get back on his feet. Her parents weren't exactly enamoured, but Mike had a good heart and was trying. Mike and his best friend Terry were still fairly into the art scene, and encouraged Michonne to take time away from work to indulge in it too.
Michonne was dating Mike for less than six months when she found out she was pregnant, a minor adjustment to her life plan, but not a derailment. Mike took the news well and the couple opted to find an apartment together rather than rush headlong into marriage too early -Michonne's parents also preferred this to a marriage for the sake of the baby. The baby was a healthy little boy, Michonne named him Andre and fell instantly in love with him. To her, he was utter perfection, regardless of how much of a surprise he was.
Parenting didn't exactly come easy, but it flowed well with their dynamic, Mike was a very hands on parent which allowed Michonne to continue to work while Andre was growing up. For the most part, things worked out for them, two years into living together with their son and Mike and Michonne were starting to talk about marriage, the possibility of more children, maybe moving from Georgia to somewhere Michonne could have better job prospects.
It all came tumbling down on a quiet weekend.
Michonne tried not to work late, preferring to be at home to put Andre to bed after dinner, but with a large case facing her and the potential to overturn a death row case on it's last appeal, Michonne was working late into the night. She got a phone call shortly before midnight, the police asking her to come to the station. She worried that Mike or Terry had fallen into old habits, that they'd been with their gang friends during a bust. The reality was much worse. Unbeknown to Michonne, Mike had been in contact with his old gang mates, pushing some product for them, a rival had taken exception to the move in on his territory and ordered a drive by.
Terry and Mike had been in the sitting room, they were killed by numerous bullets through the wall and window. Unfortunately, due to Andre wanting to wait for Michonne to come home, the boy was also in the living room, rather than in his bed. Andre died at hospital from complications caused by bullet injuries.
The death of her son broke Michonne in a lot of ways, she was given compassionate leave from work, her parents insisted she stay with them while her apartment was a crime scene, her family attempting to help her through her grief. Michonne was numb to almost everything around her, coasting through life for the six months it took her to go outside. When she did venture out into the world again, it was to discover that the gangbanger who killed her son had skipped his bail and no one could track him down.
That didn't sit well with Michonne, she took it upon herself to track him down, using a few of her contacts from work, some of whom attempted to talk her out of it. Michonne wasn't swayed, and went full tilt into finding the man. She did, with a single minded focus like hers it didn't take her too long. That was also when she discovered he'd killed a high school student while he was out on bail.
Using her anger and discontent to fuel her, Michonne turned her skills to bounty hunting on a more permanent basis, starting with bail skippers, working her way to fugitives. She cut herself off from most things she previously was part of, her friends dwindled and her contact with her family grew less and less, Michonne separating herself from things that could, in the long run, come back to hurt her. She started to make a name for herself, moving around more rather than staying in Atlanta where things just hurt.
Mostly living out of her car, Michonne worked her way across country, honing her skills with fire arms and a baton for the more serious of bounty's. Eventually, after a few years of moving around, Michonne put down a deposit in Orange County. Opting to stay for a while in the one place to have somewhere to rest between jobs. And a beach seemed the best place, furthest removed from Atlanta.
